John Shaw Hosts Fireside Chat as MU Scholar-in-Residence

Partner John Shaw hosted a fireside chat at the University of Missouri College of Arts and Science on May 5 as the 2022 William Francis English Scholar-in-Residence. Topics included:

  • The differences in what students are assigned to read today vs. 50 years ago, and what it might mean;
  • How to truly teach students a love of reading and learning; and
  • Why literature enhances students’ education no matter their field of study.

The William Francis English Scholar-in-Residence Program is a result of the fund established by family, friends, and business associates of Dr. William Francis English. Dr. English served as Assistant Dean, Associated Dean, and Dean of the College of Arts and Science at the University of Missouri, serving in the later role from 1955-1969.

John Shaw graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a B.A. and an M.A. in English Literature. He also obtained his J.D. from the University of Missouri School of Law. He was the 2003 College of Arts and Science commencement speaker and received the College’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005.
