Firm Named “Most Supportive Law Firm” by UMKC Black Law Students Association

Berkowitz Oliver was named “Most Supportive Law Firm” by the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School’s Black Law Students Association (BLSA) for 2022-2023. The award was presented at BLSA’s first-ever year-end celebration and awards ceremony “in special recognition of the firm’s outstanding commitment to diversity and the upliftment of all.” Attorneys Stacey Gilman, Kathy Nemechek, and Diamond Thomas accepted the award at the ceremony.

Partner Stacey Gilman said “UMKC BLSA’s decision to name our firm ‘Most Supportive Law Firm’ was truly a highlight of my career. Our ongoing connection with BLSA is so important to all of us, and it is very meaningful to know that the students and alumni value the relationship as well.”

One of the highlights of the partnership between Berkowitz Oliver and UMKC BLSA was the September 29, 2022 panel hosted at the firm’s offices in which a panel of judges and clerks spoke to local law students about judicial clerkships and internships. Berkowitz Oliver associate and former judicial law clerk Jasmine Ward was a panelist.

Partner Megan Costello, who co-chaired the clerkship event for the firm along with Stacey and Jasmine, explained “The event was inspired by an informal brainstorming session with BLSA leadership about how the firm could best support diverse law students. We were thrilled with the panelists and attendees who turned out to make it a reality. And, we look forward to planning with the incoming student leadership for the next school year – and beyond!”
